History
Children's was formed in 1998 when Egleston Children's Health Care System and Scottish Rite Children's Medical Center effectively merged by creating Children's Healthcare of Atlanta as the controlling company for both hospitals. This merger enabled Children's to combine existing services, eliminate operational redundancies and reduce costs. It also allowed the newly formed organization to develop a joint vision with the Emory University School of Medicine aimed at improving patient care and advancing research and education.
The Scottish Rite Convalescent Hospital for Crippled Children opened just east of Atlanta in Decatur, Georgia in 1915 with two rented cottages that accommodated up to 18 patients. In 1976, Scottish Rite moved to its current location in North Atlanta, and after 1989 it changed its name to Scottish Rite Children's Hospital, including the Scottish Rite Medical Center Foundation, the Meridian Mark Corporation, and the Wilbur and Hilda Glenn Hospital for Children. Today, Scottish Rite Hospital is licensed to operate 303 beds.
Egleston began in 1928 as a children's hospital in downtown Atlanta with 52 beds, serving 605 patients in the first year. Egleston became affiliated with the Emory University School of Medicine in 1956 and moved its hospital to its current location on Clifton Road adjacent to Emory University in 1959. In 1978, Egleston increased its number of beds to 165. Egleston established an integrated healthcare system in 1994, providing prevention, primary care, minor emergency care, specialty care and home care. Today, Egleston Hospital is licensed to operate 295 beds.
The Hughes Spalding Pavilion opened in 1952 as a private hospital on the campus of Grady Memorial Hospital and became a dedicated pediatric facility in 1992. In 2006 Children's assumed the clinical operations of Hughes Spalding and in 2010 the hospital completed a major renovation including a new emergency department. The hospital currently is licensed for 117 beds.As Children's continues to better serve the needs of the children of Georgia the development of a pediatric medical campus in north Druid Hills is underway. This campus will be home to the Center for Advanced Pediatrics and a new state of the art pediatric hospital. The 260,000 square foot, eight-story Center will bring a multidisciplinary cadre of pediatric specialists, state of the art technology, and cutting-edge research for outpatient pediatric care together to improve the patient experience and allow families easier access to the specialized, coordinated, multidisciplinary care for their children. The new hospital anticipated to open in 2025 will be a full service hospital for inpatient medical care and will consolidate some high-acuity programs to one location.
Children's Emergency Services
More than 235,000 patients each year, from the routine to the most extraordinary medical cases are treated at the three campuses of Children's. Emergency care is provided by two distinct groups, faculty of the Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine and Pediatric Emergency Medicine Associates (PEMA), a private practice group. Though the majority of care delivered by these groups is provided at different locations in the System, PEMA and the Division have had a relationship over the years and there is a deliberate and enhanced focus on advancing the alignment and culture of excellence of emergency care delivery across Children's.
The Egleston Campus which opened in 1984 is home to the first and only state-designated Level I pediatric trauma center in Georgia. The facility has 40 emergency department beds and construction is currently underway to expand to 45 beds. It is located on the Emory University campus in the Decatur/Druid Hills area of Atlanta. The Emergency Department (ED) is comprised of a high performing group of professionals with a reputation as a premier provider of emergency care across the country. The Egleston ED is staffed predominantly by faculty of the Pediatric Emergency Medicine Division of Emory's Department of Pediatrics (see below for further details). Annual volumes at Egleston exceed 75,000 patients/year.
The Hughes Spalding Campus is centrally located in downtown Atlanta. The campus continues to see significant growth in volume and will be expanding the ED from 29 to 39 beds this year. Physician staffing is provided by the Emory Pediatric EM Division. Annual volumes exceed 65,000 patients/year.
The Scottish Rite Campus contains the state's only Level II pediatric trauma center. It is close to I-285 and GA-400 in the Perimeter/Dunwoody area of Atlanta. The ED has 54 beds and sees over 101,000 visits a year. The ED is staffed by PEMA which was incorporated in 2000 but established in 1984 when the leadership at Scottish Rite Children's Hospital recognized the need in the Atlanta area for a pediatric emergency room. Under the leadership of Dr. Joseph Simon, Atlanta's first free-standing, exclusively pediatric emergency facility was established in July of 1984 which was four years before pediatric emergency medicine was recognized as a specialty with board certification.
Initially staffed by four pediatric trained physicians with a special interest in acute care, the service has grown to over 100 physicians and advanced practice providers and also includes a procedural sedation service (PSS). The physicians are active in teaching and research supporting over 30 resident and 71 medical student rotations, however PEMA remains primarily focused on providing efficient, high quality medical care to ill and injured children.
The Scottish Rite campus has consistently remained in the top quartile of all benchmarks related to throughput and left without being seen.
Major strides have been made in patient throughput and patient experience across all sites. ED throughput, customer service, left without being seen rates and clinical quality metrics are benchmarks for the rest of the country.
