The ACOS, R&D is appointed by the Medical Center Director. The Director assigns day-to-day mgmt and oversight of the Human Research and Animal Care and Use Program . This will also include the outpatient follow up visits, post discharge follow-up and managing care with specialty and sub-specialty medical providers. Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Reviewing the USD Federal wide Assurance of protection for animal subjects with the Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare. Assuring that the ACUP obtains and maintains accreditation of the animal research program with the Association for the Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care, International (AAALAC, Int.). Obtaining and updating Memorandums of Understanding with the USD IRB, the USD IACUC, the USD IBC, and the VA Central Office IRB. Submitting and amending as needed the VA Veterinary Medical Unit (VMU) annual report. Assistance to the investigators within the facility by providing advice and guidance in the preparation and submission of R&D proposals, reports, publications, grants, etc. Preparation and dissemination of policies, procedures and/or memorandums that affect research at the Sioux Falls Veterans Administration Medical Center. Dissemination of educational materials to all investigators with active or planned research programs, IRB members, IACUC members, and R&D Committee members. The ACOS, R&D, R&D shall be responsible for maintaining accurate, up-to-date records regarding the mandatory training and certification of investigators and other appropriate research staff in the protection of human research subjects. Preparation and dissemination of all required reports. Financial management of the facility's R&D program by: preparing and submitting estimates of budgetary requirements; and administering funds allocated to each project and any non-VA monies available in the facility's General Post Fund designated for R&D activities by the Medical Center Director.
