JOB SUMMARY:
This Principal Virtualization System Administrator role is exclusive to core VUMC-wide Information Technology departments supporting centralized Enterprise systems in a virtualized environment. Provides leadership in the research, architecture, design, build, and maintenance of systems and infrastructure components for enterprise mission-critical computing environments. Provides expert level engineering services for system infrastructure, including design, install, maintain, upgrade, backup, disaster recovery, networking, system security, monitoring, performance tuning, and capacity management while adhering to enterprise change management process and procedures. Researches, recommends, develops, enforces, and follows standards, policies and procedures for maintaining the security and integrity of systems and ensures that they meet availability and disaster recovery requirements. Ability to solve highly complex problems. Considered a domain subject-matter expert offering expert-level advice.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Researches, reviews and recommends hardware and software improvements. Interacts with vendors on technical solutions. Analyzes and validates business and technical requirements to ensure system will perform optimally.
Installs and configures server operating systems of high complexity.
Administers server infrastructure and infrastructure appliances including data center, security, firewalls, authentication services, domain name services and disk storage.
Schedules and executes infrastructure and system upgrades and patches to address security issues, bug fixes and functional enhancements.
Installs and configures backup and disaster recovery software. Architects and develops disaster recovery strategies.
Architects, designs, builds, and maintains automation to monitor the overall health of infrastructure and systems including performance, hardware, capacity, security, logs and responds appropriately as required.
Researches, architects, designs, builds, and maintains relevant security policies, regulatory governances, as well as software for task automation and integrations purposes.

TECHNICAL CAPABILITIES:
SERVER ADMINISTRATION (EXPERT): Is a recognized expert and authority in the skill. Is the last internal resource for support or direction. Expected to have the ultimate knowledge, control, influence, and/or jurisdiction in the skill. Demonstrates industry leadership in outside professional organizations and forums.
SERVER INSTALLATION AND UPGRADE (EXPERT): Is considered an expert in the installation and upgrade of critical and complex software. Demonstrates the ability to design and implement software solutions to complex issues.
SERVER MONITORING AND TUNING (EXPERT): Is a recognized expert and authority in system performance tuning. Acts as internal resource for support or direction in the skill. Expected to have the ultimate control over the metrics involved in a performance tuning exercise. Devises ways to measure things for which there are no direct metrics. Plans and integrates complex performance tuning tests and benchmarks that span many areas of technology. Draws conclusions and make recommendations.
SERVER SECURITY (EXPERT): Is an expert and authority in the security field. Leads mission- critical security task teams. Is a member of and/or certified in this field by recognized security organizations.
NETWORK OPERATING SYSTEMS (EXPERT): Able to resolve most performance problems. Can configure and trouble-shoot all aspects of the network operating system. Well versed in all details of restart/recovery, operating system communication, and user interface. Able to oversee minor fixes/enhancements/patches to operating system. Sought by others to explain/resolve more complex operating system issues. Capable of working with systems programmers to design, install, or maintain an operating system. Deep understanding of the characteristics of the network operating systems.
