This position is located at the Hampton VAMC, within the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Service (PMRS). The clinical duties, responsibilities and administrative duties are carried out within the Hampton VA Medical Center and associated CBOCs and future clinics in the Southside area. The physician may be required to travel between the various facilities. Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education: Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Licensure: Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Language: Proficiency in spoken and written English. Preferred Qualification: Subspecialty boarding in Brain Injury Medicine or no less than 2 years' experience in the field of Brain Injury Medicine Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office. Physical Requirements: The physician should be physically and mentally capable to perform the duties of the position including examinations, formulate the diagnosis and treatment plan and educate residents. Physical activities include sitting, standing (up to 4 hours) walking (up to 2 hours), heavy lifting (45 pounds or over), reaching above the shoulder, and repeated bending. The duties of the Section Chief/Polytrauma - Physiatrist are, but not limited to: Participation in Quality Management activities Participates in committees as designated by the COS or Chief PMRS Participate in appropriate continuing education activities as necessary Familiarity with and adheres to the Medical Staff Bylaws and VHA Rules and Regulations. An integral member of the Interdisciplinary Polytrauma Team and PMRS Team as needed in the delivery of care for chronic pain patients. Responsible for supervision of staff and evaluations: OPPE/FPPE Monitor and ensure compliance with compliance with expected clinic operational and quality metrics (SAIL, HEDIS, etc.) Responsible to develop both short- and long-term plans for the section. Provide patient care in the Polytrauma and Pain Management setting which includes the clinical outpatient area, and the inpatient setting as needed. Provide services as specified in his/her clinical privileges. Services include new patient consultation, established (follow up) visits and interventional pain management procedures. provide the patient with risks, benefits and alternative treatments and securing the informed consent of the patient/family needed before conducting invasive procedures. Evaluate patients to assess any changes in the physical status, and make recommendations for continue care as needed. Participate in various hospital committees, department and hospital in-service programs and acquire CME's as required. Provide assessment physical and functional status of Veterans in the Physical Medicine and Pain clinics. Recommends and work with the interdisciplinary team to coordinate care to provide optimal functioning, level of pain, and quality of life for Veterans. Provide support to the Polytrauma Management program which includes training of providers within the Medical Center on various aspects of assessment and management of care for multiple diagnoses related to the specialty of physical medicine and pain. Assist with the performance of the Polytrauma Management programs in the areas of consultation to the pain providers through regular interdisciplinary team meetings. Collaborates with the Coordinators of the Polytrauma/TBI, amputee, and SCI programs, providing coverage for these clinics when there is a need. Makes recommendations to Chief of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation regarding all resource management issues; including equipment, space, and educational opportunities etc. Consults and requested Physical Medicine services are performed in a timely manner and that the results are made readily available to the referring practitioners Other duties as assigned.
