Spending nearly one year developing a single mission statement and values for the entire organization, SSM Health tasked 3,000 employees with framing it just right. Today that mission statement is 13 words – short by design. Inspired by the founding religious sisters, the mission defines the way SSM Health operates. Laura Kaiser joined SSM Health as President and CEO in early 2017. Since that time, she has led a rigorous process to embark upon a new strategic direction, appropriately titled: Vision 2023. The key tenets of the new strategic direction have been encapsulated in the following statement, "As a Catholic healing ministry, SSM Health will be a leader in delivering compassionate, safe, affordable, and accessible care designed around the needs of the individual. We will nurture the well-being of our communities and partner with others to continuously seek out innovative solutions that improve health in every stage of life." From this strategic direction, SSM Health has determined four strategic areas of focus: Growth and Partnership, Exceptional Performance, Connectivity and Culture, and Transformation. The system has furthermore outlined definition around each of the strategic areas of focus, which are outlined below.

SSM Health an operating model that consists of seven systems to align the system’s people, processes, methods, and behaviors with the Mission to provide exceptional care to patients, their families, coworkers and all those they serve. Using the operating model as a guide, SSM Health will ensure their plans, projects, processes and daily activities are developed, deployed and improved in an integrated manner to achieve our strategic objectives and true north aspirations.
