WellSpan Health (WellSpan), a growing, integrated health system with net revenues of $3.3 billion, seeks a progressive, innovative and contemporary executive to serve as its next Chief Operating Officer (COO). This leadership role will be available due to the planned retirement of John Porter and is an outstanding opportunity to join a financially strong, innovative, independent regional health system that truly lives its mission.
WellSpan serves the communities of South Central Pennsylvania and Northern Maryland. The Health System is comprised of a 20,000 employees, 1,600 employed physicians and APPs, a regional behavioral health organization, a home care organization, and eight acute care hospitals and over 180 outpatient care locations across the region. WellSpan has experienced significant growth over the last five years and maintains a strong reputation as the leading community-focused integrated care delivery system in the region. Among the hallmarks of WellSpan is a collaborative organizational culture where leaders have a deep sense of mutual support and trust.
Reporting to the CEO, Roxanna Gapstur, the COO has a broad role, ensuring the growth and operational success of the health system. Working in a dyad partnership with the Chief Physician Executive, and in collaboration with other leaders, the COO will share responsibility for the overall operational performance for the health system. The EVP will work with the Regional Presidents and affiliated Boards to develop strategies that will drive and support system growth while further developing an understanding and readiness for ensuring a high performing organization with a strong sense of ‘systemness.' The COO will also focus on the continued integration and advancement of standardized operational processes across the regions and entire system, leveraging Lean as a method to engage team members in optimizing the performance across the clinical and operating enterprise.
WellSpan is deeply committed to population health and is well underway with advancing value-based models of care and health plan partnerships; candidates should preferably have a track record working with an integrated system that has a health plan or progressive health plan partnerships. The COO will be an outcomes-oriented, collaborative leader with a proven track record of leading high-performing, service-oriented organizations; will have a strong track record advancing patient safety, patient experience and employee engagement efforts; and will have a clear commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, possessing a track record of supporting systematic advancements in DEI.
