Overview The Clinical Quality Consultant will work with a variety of constituencies. The Clinical Quality Consultant may liaison with medical staff committees. This includes collaboration with Medical Staff Chairpersons, Hospital Administrators, and Service Line Directors to create successful Medical Staff Committee Meetings and to promote alignment between the hospital and Medical Staff goals. This also includes facilitation of the peer review process. The Clinical Quality Consultant may assist hospital committees and taskforces, including membership, participation in the assignments, accountability for output, or chairperson in some cases. The Clinical Quality Consultant may manage elements of the Occurrence Reporting system, including quality referral investigation and resolution. The Clinical Quality Consultant may facilitate Root Cause Analysis of specific events where there has been variation from the established process of patient care. The Clinical Quality Consultant may also function as facilitator for Joint Commission Accreditation - establishing structure, mechanisms, and expectations so that the hospital maintains Joint Commission Accreditation. This function includes management within other domains of regulation and compliance, to the extent that those domains are necessary for Joint Commission accreditation. The Clinical Quality Consultant may also function as a consultant within the hospital for clinical quality process improvements. This function involves identification and implementation of practice standards, assistance in establishing goals and focus, advising on the necessary elements if successful process management, aid in establishing measurement design and reporting mechanisms, and assuring standards of administrative documentation are met. The Consultant for Patient Safety in the Quality Department leads investigations of complex quality and patient safety events in order to prevent recurrence, maximizing learning, and mitigate preventable patient and healthcare worker harm. Additionally, this individual assists in the planning, coordination, and implementation of safety projects as defined by the annual Patient Safety Strategic plan. This individual uses industry tools and methods to identify and initiate analysis of systems to prevent future errors; collaborate with facility leaders and system experts to implement corrective actions; apply principles of reliable design to ensure delivery of evidence-based care and reduction in preventable harm, and develop process/performance improvement plans. This individual facilitates Root Cause Analysis (RCA), which includes interviewing staff involved in an event, documenting event details, working with local teams to develop robust corrective action plans, implement changes, and monitor action plans to completion. Additionally, the Consultant for Patient Safety in the Quality Department investigates/explores complex patient safety, quality, and organizational issues in order to identify and develop strategic priorities for improvement. This individual is responsible for identifying and Initiating evaluation and redesign of systems to improve care processes to prevent future errors; identifying necessary resources to fully implement the patient safety improvement program; partnering with facility leaders to act on any resource barriers; focusing on reliability and applying the principles of reliable design to improve the consistent delivery of evidence-based care and reduction in preventable harm; developing process/performance improvement plans; directing/managing implementation teams; and bringing projects to completion. The performance projects for which this individual has responsibility will most often be house wide cross-departmental, cross-functional and complex in nature. It is also expected that this individual has a strong working knowledge of regulatory requirements affecting the development of implementation strategies (e.g., CMS, JCAHO, HIPPA, etc.).
