LVHN has three clinical institutes: Lehigh Valley Cancer Institute, Lehigh Valley Heart Institute and Lehigh Valley Institute for Surgical Excellence. Each serves as a hub of innovation, research and education, with the aim to enhance and improve care. Lehigh Valley Cancer Institute is a member of the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Alliance, giving patients access to world-class care, including clinical trials and the latest cancer treatments, close to home.

LVHN is one of the nation's most respected health networks, offering comprehensive care in 95 clinical specialties. This care is complemented by clinical research and education, including a medical school partnership with the University of South (USF) Florida Morsani College of Medicine that is preparing the doctors of tomorrow.

LVHN is driven by a legacy of patient-centered care that began with 13 compassionate, civic-minded women more than a century ago. Devoted to the health and well-being of their community, they raised $5,300 for a plot of land at 17th and Chew Streets in Allentown, Pennsylvania, and in 1899, opened The Allentown Hospital. Their generous vision was the first step in LVHN’s journey.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Executive Vice President & Chief Operating Officer has responsibility over the hospital and ambulatory operations for Lehigh Valley Health Network. He/she also leads Facilities/Construction. Direct reports include: All Hospital Presidents; SVP of Ambulatory Services; President of Coordinated Health; and the VP of Facilities/Construction. The EVP & COO will serve as a high-level partner to the LVHN President & Chief Executive Officer, Board of Trustees, and medical staff to achieve financial, quality, and strategic initiatives. He/she will drive operational excellence across LVHN and will ensure hospital, ambulatory and related services are delivered in accordance with established quality standards and financial expectations. The EVP & COO also represents LVHN to various community, public and governmental organizations.   

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 

• Lead the development of, and is responsible for carrying out goals, objectives, plans, and policies established by the President and Board of Trustees.
• Effectively directs and contributes to the strategic planning process by establishing network annual goals and approves entity annual goals to support its achievement. Recognize that trade-offs need to be made with sensitivity and be based on the needs of an evolving health care environment, ensuring changes are incorporated dynamically into the plan. Balance the desire for growth with the responsibility to achieve goals amidst rapid change.
• Is responsible for ensuring all network services (inpatient, outpatient, ambulatory, pre- and post-hospital) are delivered in accordance with quality and financial standards.
• Represent the network and its operations in public and community forums and in professional associations.
• Own and drive organizational short- and long-range operations and clinical objectives consistent with the philosophy and mission of the network.
• Serve as chief advisor to the CEO and is the #2 leader for the network; is extremely fluent in the business of healthcare.
• Drive programs and activities to promote a positive environment of engagement and professionalism, and achievement of the mission, vision, and values of the system.
• Role model to facilitate a clear and open dialog regarding core values to internal staff and external constituents.
• Create and execute plans that promote quality, service, and growth with an eye towards efficiencies and synergies; ensure coordination of services and groups to achieve aggressive growth targets across all entities; create a proactive approach to growth.
• In conjunction with the Chief Business Development Officer, the COO will help drive the planning, development, and execution of all mergers, joint ventures, acquisitions, and other segments to realize efficiencies and leverage the value proposition to patients.
• Oversee the Office of Integration to assure smooth integration across all businesses and cultures; develop and implement phased plans to achieve operational synergies, clinical integration without operational delays.
• Holds entity business leaders (presidents and operations leaders accountable to use lean methodologies to achieve service and quality metrics, efficiency of patient flow, service growth, and budgetary adherence in inpatient and outpatient settings; ensure regulatory compliance across the board.
• Ensure facilities are maintained with efficiency in operations and in meeting contractual needs.
• Ensure all human aspects of operations and works with HR and leaders to engage colleagues and build talent to meet needs.
• Drive endless pursuit of dynamic and disruptive products and processes that meet consumer needs and contribute to a patient-centered experience; is responsible for all satisfaction metrics.
• Leverage deep financial and strategic operations acumen to win support of approaches and create organizational commitment
• In support of the overall business strategy, will help lead LVHN further into population health and value-based care. Will build operations to support and excel in a value-driven, versus volume-driven, environment.
